What this means:A black box warning is the FDA's strongest required safety notice. It signals a serious or life-threatening risk. Patients should review this with their prescriber before starting, continuing, or switching Bupropion.

Seizure Risk: Bupropion is CONTRAINDICATED in patients with a seizure disorder, eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia — cause electrolyte disturbances and lower seizure threshold), or who have abruptly discontinued alcohol or benzodiazepines. Do not exceed maximum recommended doses — seizure risk is dose-dependent.
Neuropsychiatric Risk (Smoking Cessation): FDA black box warning for Zyban — reports of hostility, agitation, depression, and suicidal thoughts during smoking cessation treatment.
Hypertension: Monitor blood pressure; more likely in patients also using nicotine patches.
