Potentially life-threatening or causing permanent damage. Avoid combination.
May worsen condition or require dose adjustment. Monitor closely.
Usually limited clinical effect. Manage with routine monitoring.
Bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine, colestipol)
Cholestyramine and colestipol bind ursodiol in the gut, preventing absorption. Do not take within 2 hours of ursodiol.
Aluminum-containing antacids
Aluminum binds bile acids, reducing ursodiol absorption. Separate by at least 2 hours.
Oral contraceptives
Estrogen-containing medicines increase biliary cholesterol secretion, potentially counteracting gallstone dissolution therapy.
Clofibrate, other fibrates
Increase hepatic cholesterol secretion into bile, potentially opposing ursodiol's gallstone-dissolving effect.
Cyclosporine
Ursodiol may increase cyclosporine absorption. Monitor cyclosporine levels.
Always ask your pharmacist about potential interactions with food, alcohol, and supplements specific to Ursodiol. Some medicines have significant interactions with grapefruit juice, high-fat meals, dairy products, or vitamin K-rich foods.
