Diarrhea (approximately 12.5%), which is usually mild and most common in the first 3 months
Nausea (approximately 7%)
Dyspepsia / indigestion (approximately 7%)
Skin rash (approximately 5%), typically maculopapular or urticarial and appearing within the first 3 months
Gastrointestinal pain or abdominal discomfort (approximately 4%)
Vomiting and flatulence
Anorexia (loss of appetite)
Dizziness
Neutropenia / agranulocytosis (approximately 2.4% overall, severe in about 0.8%), usually appearing within the first 3 months and reversible if detected early and the drug is stopped
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a medical emergency estimated to occur in roughly 1 in every 2000 to 4000 treated patients, presenting with fever, fragmented red cells, low platelets, neurologic changes, and kidney dysfunction
Aplastic anemia, estimated at roughly 1 in every 4000 to 8000 treated patients, which can be fatal
Thrombocytopenia and bleeding (gastrointestinal hemorrhage, ecchymosis, purpura, epistaxis, hematuria)
Cholestatic jaundice and hepatitis with elevated liver enzymes
Pancytopenia and immune thrombocytopenia
Severe skin reactions including erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and exfoliative dermatitis
Systemic lupus erythematosus and vasculitis
Serum sickness, arthropathy, and angioedema
Hemolytic anemia with reticulocytosis
Allergic pneumonitis and peripheral neuropathy
Nephrotic syndrome and acute renal failure (often in association with TTP)
Like all medications, Ticlopidine can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes this medication will experience them. Many side effects are dose-dependent and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Others may require dose adjustment or medical attention.
