Managing Thyroid Side Effects

Like all medications, Thyroid can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes this medication will experience them. Many side effects are dose-dependent and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Others may require dose adjustment or medical attention.

When to Contact Your Doctor

Contact your healthcare provider promptly if you experience:

• Any serious side effects listed above
• Side effects that are persistent or worsen over time
• Symptoms that significantly impact your quality of life
• Any unexpected or unusual symptoms not listed here

When to Seek Emergency Care

Seek immediate emergency medical care if you experience signs of:

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): difficulty breathing, swelling of face/throat, hives
• Signs of liver problems: severe abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine
• Severe muscle breakdown (if applicable): extreme muscle pain, weakness, dark/brown urine
• Any life-threatening symptoms described in the Serious Side Effects section above

Tips for Minimizing Side Effects

• Take the medication exactly as prescribed — don't exceed the recommended dose
• Take with food if GI side effects occur (unless contraindicated)
• Stay well hydrated
• Avoid alcohol unless your doctor says it's acceptable
• Keep a side effect diary to discuss with your pharmacist or physician
• Never stop a prescription medication due to side effects without consulting your provider
